India Elects First Female President Pratibha Patil - July 21, 2007 - Pratibha Patil won 65.8% of the votes cast by national and state legislators, becoming the first female president of India. India has had other female leaders, most notably Prime Minister Indira Ghandi.  Pratibha Patil is a lawyer, congresswoman and the former governor of the northern state of Rajasthan.  She was handpicked by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.  Although the Prime Minister role has most of the power in the Indian government, the President is the supreme commander of the armed forces.
