A record of 58 women rise to power in US state legislatures - April 2, 2007 - According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 58 women are in state legislature leadership positions in 2007.  This is a 20% gain over the 48 women who held leadership positions in 2006.  Although 23.5% of the state legislators in 2007 are women, women hold only 17% of the leadership positions. The leadership positions include President of the Senate, Speaker of the House, Majority Leader, Minority Leader, President Pro Tem, Speaker Pro Tem, Majority Whip and Minority Whip.  Eight women are President of the Senate and four women are Speaker of the House in their state. In New Hampshire, women hold both positions: President of the Senate and Speaker of the House.
