A record 35 women preside over their national legislatures - March 1, 2007 - The Inter-Parliamentary Union reports that a record 35 women preside over one of the houses in their national legislatures in 2007.  Although Nancy Pelosi is the first women in the United States to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austria was the first country in 1927 to have a woman preside over its parliament. A total of 78 women from 42 countries have presided over their national legislatures or one of the houses in their national legislatures.
