Governor's race in Massachusetts makes history with woman and black candidate - September 20, 2006 - As a result of the September 19th primary in Massachusetts, the candidates for governor will be Kerry Healey (Republican) and Deval Patrick (Democrat).  Kerry Healy, a woman, is currently lieutenant governor.  Deval Patrick, a black, ran the Justice Department's civil rights division in the Clinton administration.  If elected, Kerry Healy would be the first woman elected governor.  (Although Jane Swift was previously acting governor of Massachusetts, she was not elected governor.  She was lieutenant governor and became acting governor when Governor Argeo Paul Cellucci became US Ambassador to Canada.)  If Deval Patrick is elected, he would become the first black governor of Massachusetts and the second black elected governor in the US, after Douglas Wilder of Virginia.
