UK political party encourages local officials to recruit more women and minority candidates - September 18, 2006 - The Liberal Democratic party in the UK wants to reach more voters by recruiting more women and minority candidates.  To accomplish this, the party set up a £200,000 fund to support women and ethnic minority candidates.  The Liberal Democrat president Simon Hughes said this was not about "political correctness" but "political engagement".  The party had already advocated for better training for women and minority candidates.
