Iowa Names First Woman Chief Justice on Supreme Court - September 5, 2006 - Justice Marsha K. Ternus was elected Chief Justice by the Iowa Supreme Court.  Justice Ternus will be the first woman to serve as Chief Justice, succeeding Chief Justice Louis Lavorato who is retiring at the end of September.  Iowa will join fifteen other states that have a woman Chief Justice on their highest court.  Justice Ternus is the only woman currently on the Iowa Supreme Court, and only the second women to ever serve on the Iowa Supreme Court.
