Portia Simpson Miller sworn in as Jamaica's first woman Prime Minister - March 30, 2006 - Portia Simpson Miller was sworn into office on March 30 as Jamaica's first woman Prime Minister.  She was elected by the delegates of the ruling People's National Party to replace the retiring Prime Minister.  Four candidates were contending for the position.  She will face general election in 2007.  She says her first priority will be addressing the nation's high crime rate.  Portia Simpson Miller will be the only current woman head of government in North America.
