Najah al-Attar appointed Vice President in Syria, the first woman VP in an Arab country - March 23, 2006 - Najah al-Attar was appointed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as Vice President.  Syria has two vice presidents.  Farouq al-Sharaa was previously appointed Vice President in charge of foreign affairs and Najah al-Attar is the Vice President in charge of cultural policy.  She is the first woman to become vice president in an Arab country.  She was previously culture minister for more than two decades.  She has a doctorate degree from Edinburgh University and is the author of several books.
