 | Number of women in Iraqi parliament exceeds 24% - March 15, 2006 - Sixty-seven women are included in the newly-elected Iraqi parliament out of total of 275 members. That equates to 24.4% of the parliament. By comparison, the US House has 67 women representatives out of total of 435 members, meaning that women are 15.4% of the representatives. Each political party in Iraq is required to have women as one-third of their candidates. But, because there are so many parties in Iraqi and most parties had only a few candidates, the total number of women candidates was less than 33%. For instance, if a party only had 5 candidates, only 1 might be a woman. Nonetheless, the number of women elected came close to the goal of 25%. Back to News Headlines |
