Women made political gains worldwide in 2005, but the US lagged behind - January 3, 2006 - As women make political gains worldwide, the US is below the global average for women in the national legislatures.  14% of the US Senators are women, versus a global average of 14.8%.  Sixty-seven of the 435 representatives in the US House are women, which is 15.4%, versus a global average of 16.3%.  According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the number of women in national legislatures is at a new high of 6,960, or 16.1% worldwide, versus 15.1% for the percentage of women in the US Congress (the US Senate and House of Representatives combined).
